Statement about your relation with Yamaha or your instrument:
I've been with Yamaha for over 30 years and it has been fantastic to have had the support from Yamaha in all areas of the work that I do including percussion solo and quartet playing (with BackBeat Percussion Quartet who are also artists), playing in commercial music and adjudicating and presenting competitions, festivals and concerts.
How does your instrument help you in your daily life as an artist?
All Yamaha instruments are of the highest quality and are certainly built to last! I still have and frequently use several instruments that I started playing on right at the start of my 30+ year relationship with Yamaha and they sound as good today as they did in 1992!
Who was your most influential teacher and is there any advice which you still follow?
I've been guided by some amazing teachers over the years including my music teacher Norma Carroll, my first percussion teacher Peter Thorpe and my tutors at the RNCM including Ian Wright and Dave Hassell. All my teachers have given me so much invaluable advice over the years, it would be difficult to list it all here, but I would say one of the most important pieces of advice is to love what you do, as that is what drives you on and keeps you passionate about all aspects of your playing - performing, practising, and your creative development as a musician.
